"A Portrait of my child, once a week, every week, in 2014."

Back in her element after a few very long days cooped up inside. What is about nature that instantly resets our energy and mood... The constant West coast sunshine has us quite spoiled.

what julie ate

Man, toddlers are a picky bunch...One day she loves the breakfast I make her. Literally, she can't get enough, and is shoveling fistfuls of food into her mouth. The next day, this very same meal is spit out quite vehemently. Sigh... I'm thinking I need to up my creativity game. I'm thankful for the infinite variety of wonderful cookbooks out there. I think it helps to approach this whole process with a bit of a relaxed attitude. I'm still working on acquiring this.

Breakfast: Cream of buckwheat with coconut oil, vanilla almond milk, cinnamon
Snack: Roasted nori seaweed
Lunch: Jasmine rice with zucchini, carrots, kelp, and olive oil, avocado, soy yogurt
Snack: Green smoothie with spinach, blueberries, banana, orange juice, and flaxseeds, her favorite cracker
Dinner: Broccoli casserole with brown rice and tahini, modified from this wonderful cookbook

10 things i'm grateful for

1. Fresh coconut water--straight out of the coconut

2. A quiet night--just me and my knitting (and some silly TV)

3. A cupboard full of freshly cleaned dishes

4. A wonderful visit from my Dad, from all the way across the country

5. Waking up next to my angelic (while sleeping), albeit bed hog toddler

6. Green tea with homemade pumpkin coffee cake. This cookbook never ever fails me!

7. A catch up phone call with my bestie. It never matters how many years have gone by since we've seen each other. I'm beyond grateful for the treasure of true friendship

8. A package from Japan--magazines care of Mom

9. We survived our first day of potty training

10. A very stressful situation that became a happy ending

my perfect day

My perfect day goes something like this:

It's Saturday morning.
Wake up to Julie saying with utmost urgency, "Hon!" (Books in Japanese).
James and I get an extra 10 minutes of sleep while she pores over her books.
Lazy cuddles in bed with Julie and James after all books have been read.
Meditation and a lingering cup of tea while James and Julie go on their daily walk.
A pancake breakfast together with excessive maple syrup.
An exploration of a park we have never been to before--preferably a lesser known, hidden gem.
A take-out lunch from one of our favorite vegan restaurants.
A long and leisurely nap together, followed by more cuddles.
Family playtime filled with Julie's giggles and happy squeals.
An evening walk together.
A special dinner--cooked with love and patience (and James' guitar or cello playing all the while)--with raw cupcakes for dessert.
Julie nurses to sleep within minutes.
A long, quiet bath.
James and I break out the wine and a movie/show.
We join Julie in a deep and restful sleep.

Serious perfection...

"A Portrait of my child, once a week, every week, in 2014."

I love these two together. My curly haired, thoughtful loves. She brings out the absolute best in him, and vice versa.

"A Portrait of my child, once a week, every week, in 2014".

Toddler toes! She insists on putting her feet up on every table. There will come a time when I have to wean her off of this little habit, but for now, I will just marvel at and cherish her scrumptious little toes.

"A Portrait of my child, once a week, every week, in 2014".

She sometimes makes this face when she's handing me something. There is always a palpable excitement at sharing things that she deems wonderful with those she loves, as well as an undercurrent of intensity. Perhaps it's a hallmark of the toddler years...
